Postcards to Myself - Fiji, 1988
BULA! It’s the Fijian greeting for “Hello”. For Easter vacation, we went to visit the South Pacific. Our first stop is here in Fiji. We’re staying at the Fijian Resort on Yanuca Island. One day, we visited a village and went to a Kava Ceremony. Kava is Fiji’s national drink. It is made from a root and is midly intoxicating. For the preparation ceremony, we all sat in a circle around the bowl. Then the host serves us the Kava in a cup, we had to clap once and yell “BULA!”, drink the Kava in one gulp, then clap 3 times and say “MATHE”.
